(Washington) A thirteenth person died in the accident of a cargo plane which crashed Tuesday on takeoff after one of its engines separated at the Louisville airport in Kentucky, in the central-eastern United States, according to a new report.
“I learned that a thirteenth person died following the crash of UPS Flight 2976,” Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg wrote on his X account Thursday evening.
“My thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of all the victims of this week’s tragedy. We will overcome this ordeal together,” added the elected official.
The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 from the American carrier UPS which was due to reach Hawaii, crashed late Tuesday afternoon, destroying buildings and generating an impressive plume of thick smoke.
Three crew members were on board, according to UPS, whose airline division is based in Louisville, its main air hub in the United States.
The other victims were in the path of the aircraft which ended its journey almost 5 km from the airport.
Several people are still missing.
