“There is no reason to consider him a potential suspect,” Rhode Island State Attorney General Peter Neronha told media late Sunday. “That’s why he’s released,” after being arrested in the morning.
Little information had been shared regarding the identity of this man, other than his age group, “twenties”.
“Obviously we have a murderer on the loose and so we are not going to reveal our plan” to find him, Mr. Neronha added.
Police released ten seconds of footage of the suspect, filmed from behind, walking briskly down a deserted street after the shooting. A call for witnesses has been launched by the FBI.
On Saturday, he opened fire in the engineering and physics building of the elite Ivy League university in Providence, Rhode Island, where exams were being held.
The shooter “came in, pointed his gun and shouted something,” Joseph Oduro, a lecturer present in the room, told CNN. “I don’t know what he said, and none of the other students know what he said, and then he just started shooting.” »
Two students were killed and nine injured. One is in critical condition, seven in serious but stable condition and the last has been released from hospital, Brett Smiley, the mayor of Providence, the state capital, told American media.
The containment measures introduced were lifted after the arrest of an individual but his release “risks causing new anxiety within our community”, recognizes Mr. Smiley.

No “immediate threat”
The vast majority of exams scheduled between now and the end of the semester have been canceled, Brown University announced, although it remains open.
“Local police have indicated that they do not believe there is any immediate threat,” said a message on his X account Monday morning.
More than 400 members of the police were deployed.
At an event at the White House on Sunday, Donald Trump called the attack “terrible.” “Great university, truly one of the best in the world, these things can happen,” added the American president.
