(New York) Investigators have identified and are searching for a suspect six days after the shootings that killed two students and injured nine others at Brown University in Rhode Island, US media reported Thursday.

Published at
5:50 p.m.

“Investigators believe they have identified a suspect (…), according to two law enforcement officials familiar with the matter,” announces CNN, adding that “the authorities have a warrant for (his) arrest and are currently looking for him.”

CBS News and NBC report similar reports.

A photo of the suspect was released by authorities.

The authorities’ daily press conference, which was scheduled for 4 p.m., was delayed.

A shooter opened fire Saturday in Brown’s engineering and physics building in Providence, where exams were being held, killing two students, Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, and wounding nine others.

Among the injured, three were released from the hospital on Wednesday, five were in stable condition and the last was in critical but stable condition, according to authorities.

On Sunday, a man was apprehended in this investigation, before being released due to lack of incriminating evidence.

Investigators subsequently released images of a suspect and a person who may have been in contact with him, asking for the public’s help in identifying them.

A reward of US$50,000 was promised for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator, considered “armed and dangerous”.

The American media also mentioned on Thursday a possible link between this attack and the shooting death of a professor at the University of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), some 70 kilometers away.

Found at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, Monday evening, Nuno Loureiro, 47, was pronounced dead at the hospital Tuesday morning.

Originally from Portugal, he has taught nuclear science and engineering, as well as physics, at MIT since 2016.

“At this time, there does not appear to be any connection” between this death and the attack in Brown on Saturday, said the FBI agent in charge of this second investigation, Ted Docks, during a press conference on Tuesday.
