“In America, building alliances and friendships. Today I had the privilege of being invited to the State Department,” Mr. Robinson wrote on his X account, along with a photo of himself taken on the balcony of the building with an American flag in the background.
Tommy Robinson, who calls himself a journalist and is known as an anti-immigration and anti-Islam activist, organized one of the largest far-right rallies in London last September, with more than 150,000 participants.
He then paid tribute to the ultra-conservative American influencer Charlie Kirk, assassinated on September 10. This Christian nationalist was the co-founder of the conservative youth mobilization organization Turning Point USA.
“It is an honor to welcome Tommy Robinson, defender of freedom of expression, to the State Department today,” Joe Rittenhouse, advisor in the Bureau of Consular Affairs, also published on X.
“The world and the West are better when we fight for free speech, and no one has been on the front lines more than Tommy. I’m glad to see you, my friend! “, he added.
Questioned by AFP, the State Department made no public comment.
Mr. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is the founder of the former small group English Defense League, from the hooligan movement.
He has been convicted several times, notably for disturbing public order. He was jailed in 2018 for contempt of court, then in 2024 for repeating defamatory remarks against a refugee.
