The British company “B” announced today, Sunday, the start of production from the second phase of the Riven Gas Well Development Project in Egypt, which includes linking additional naval wells to the facilities established in the Riffen land station of the West Nile Delta project.
BP, operator of the project, controls a 82.75%stake, while British Harbor Energy has 17.25%.
Gas production in Egypt
BP said in a statement that the new wells are expected to contribute to the production of about 220 billion cubic feet of gas and 7 million barrels of condensate.
Natural gas production in Egypt recently decreased, and its local supplies decreased in September 2024 to its lowest level in 7 years.
This decline led to Egypt’s return to the clear import of the importer, as it buys dozens of shipments of gas, but they are holding talks with global oil and gas companies to increase its investments to compensate for the natural decline.
The BP statement said that the completion of the program to dig the project to develop the Riffen wells before the specified timetable contributed to accelerating the start of production.
The statement quoted the regional head of “BB” in the Middle East and North Africa, Nader Zaki, as saying: “The Riffen well development project aims to confront the natural decrease and increase production, while taking advantage of our existing infrastructure to meet the needs of the local market as soon as possible.”
He added: “This confirms BP’s commitment to investing in Egypt.”

West Delta Project
“This series of successes represents an embodiment of our continuous commitment to contribute to meeting the growing local demand for energy by maximizing production from available resources and adding new resources,” said Wael Shaheen, Vice President of BP Egypt.
The West Delta project includes several gas fields located off the northern coast of Egypt within the privileges of northern Alexandria and the deep water area in the western Mediterranean.
The Reefen field is the last stage of the West Nile Delta project, and production began at the beginning of 2021, and its stages included the development of 8 naval wells located up to 65 km from the beach and at depths ranging between 550 and 700 meters.
