Nearly 24 hours after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, authorities managed to get their hands on the ship’s black box on Wednesday, the contents of which would help establish the chronology of events.
Data from the black box could explain the propulsion problem, but also the rudder problem as well as the power outages which affected the container ship shortly before it hit the bridge early Tuesday morning.
Twenty-four members of the American Transportation Safety and Security Agency have been back on the ship since Wednesday morning. The experts will also have to meet the crew members and first responders.
“Nothing is surprising about the investigation so far, but it is still young,” said Maryland Governor Wes Moore.
“There is still a lot to be determined, but no matter where the investigation takes us, we will follow it and make sure those responsible are punished,” he said.
The call from the dispatcher who alerted of the tragedy has already been made public. “The entire bridge just collapsed. Call everyone. The bridge collapsed!” can we hear.
Divers have also been back since 6 a.m. this Wednesday to try to find the bodies of six workers who were repairing potholes when the bridge collapsed.
