(Washington) US President Joe Biden will travel to New Orleans on Monday to “share the pain of the bereaved families” by the car-ramming attack which left at least 14 dead on Wednesday, the House announced on Friday -White.
The outgoing president, who will be accompanied by his wife Jill Biden, will also meet local officials, according to his services.
A former American soldier, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, “inspired” by the jihadist group Islamic State (IS), is accused of having rushed his car into the crowd in the ultra-touristy French quarter of New Orleans, in the south of United States, in the midst of New Year’s festivities.
After causing “carnage” with his vehicle, he was killed in exchanges of fire with the police.
The suspect in the attack appears to have acted alone, the FBI, the federal police, announced Thursday, after estimating the day before that he may have had accomplices.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar proclaimed his support for ISIS in several videos and claimed to have joined the jihadist organization, the FBI added.
Joe Biden praised the “spirit” of New Orleans on Thursday. “The people of New Orleans are sending an unequivocal message. They will not let this attack or attacks, this delusional ideology, defeat us,” he said at a White House news conference.
