kuala lumpur -Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expects his country’s economy negatively affected by the customs fees imposed by the United States on Malaysian goods.
Last Monday, in a speech to Parliament, the Malaysian economy would achieve the expected growth of 4.7% this year, despite the flexibility of his country’s economy.
The International Monetary Fund expected the decline in the growth of the Malaysian national product to 4.1%, while Anwar Ibrahim attributed the decline to the slowdown in global economic growth affected by the American customs duties announced on April 2, but the American administration postponed its implementation for 3 months, winning the way for bilateral talks with the affected countries, and retained the imposition of 10% on all countries.
Anwar Ibrahim referred to American allegations that indicated that the customs imposed by Malaysia on American goods reaches 47%, and said that allegations are an excuse to impose American customs duties, while what Malaysia imposes on American goods does not exceed 5.6%.
The Malaysian Prime Minister preferred to make way for the ongoing negotiations between the Malaysian and US Treasury Ministries, which indicated that it would reach the 24% reduced by the United States on Malaysian goods, and said that it was built on wrong accounts.
Political customs
Malaysian political circles linked the American customs tariff to Malaysia with political motives. The head of the Islamic Youth Movement in Malaysia, Fahmy Shams al -Din, said in a comment to (Al -Jazeera Net): “American customs cannot be excluded from the context of relations with the United States, and the geopolitical conditions in the Southeast Asia and the world.”
Shams al -Din, who leads one of the largest popular organizations in the country and close to the Anwar Ibrahim Party, pointed to policies that the United States seeks to impose on Malaysia, on top of which is the position on the Palestinian issue and the relationship with China, as the two issues top the agenda of the American Malaysian dialogues, in addition to the ASEAN group that heads Malaysia.
He added that the United States is pressuring to change Malaysia’s vision in political and commercial issues such as the Halal market that Malaysia promotes, and seeks to become an incubator for the Halal Trading, which is estimated in the world in the world.
In the internal Malaysian affairs, Shams al -Din says that Washington sees the government of Anwar Ibrahim, who presents itself as liberal, an opportunity to force Malaysia to abolish the laws that protect Islam and the Malay majority and which the United States classifies racist.
Wrong accounts
For his part, the expert in Southeast Asian affairs, Dr. Far Kim Bing, considered that the American customs duties were built on wrong accounts of the trade balance with Malaysia, saying that “the audit of accounts shows that the trade balance tends to in favor of the United States by about $ 1.6 billion.”
He added in an interview with (Al -Jazeera Net), that the American accounts focused on goods and excluded the services sector, such as insurance, education and information technology sectors dominated by the United States by 67%, and with the aim of showing that the United States is a victim, it did not enter e -commerce like Amazon in the trade balance accounts.
Ping, an expert and university professor, said that the United States excluded from customs duties its needs of the materials signed from Malaysia, such as semiconductors and electronics, which left a space for the success of the ongoing negotiations.
He attributed Malaysia’s lack of response to the American customs tariff to its desire to make the dialogue a success, and a prelude to the participation of the American President at the ASEAN summit scheduled for the end of next October.
