An individual reportedly set fire to a vehicle carrying two women at his workplace on Monday in Detroit, United States.
The man had been “recently suspended or fired” from his job at Tompkins Products, a U.S. manufacturer of screw machine products, among other things, the Daily Mail.
Visibly frustrated by the announcement, the man approached his colleagues around 6 a.m. He poured gasoline on the car they were in, then lit a cigarette to set it alight.
The suspect allegedly targeted the two women because he believed they had a role to play “in his suspension,” said Detroit Police Department Chief James White.
Both women were taken to hospital with severe burns to their faces, necks, upper torsos and shoulders. Local authorities do not fear for their lives.
The victims were believed to have managed to escape the fire before firefighters arrived, said Dennis Richardson, chief of the Detroit Fire Department’s fire investigation division.
Another employee witnessed the crime. “I heard some women screaming … and I saw the inside of the car engulfed in flames,” Saldana told WXYZ.
The man reportedly saw the suspect fleeing but refused to let him go. He allegedly grabbed him on his bike and held him against his will along with other witnesses until the police arrived.
The individual faces several charges, including one for attempted murder.
