A Michigan grocery store employee is accused of embezzling $750,000 US ($1 million Canadian) from self-service checkouts at the grocery store where he worked over a 16-month period.
The defendant, Trevor Beaver, allegedly stole the money from the Fresh Thyme Market in the town of Thyme, where he worked between July 2022 and November 2023, according to a statement from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.
“Funds were stolen from the new self-service checkouts to which Beaver had access,” it reads.
The 31-year-old reportedly set out on the schedule alone each day when the time came to take the money out of the machines, giving him the opportunity to seize it.
The company would have realized the embezzlement only after implementing a funds tracking system on these machines in October 2023, reports the New York Post.
Mr. Beaver alone would be responsible for 750,000 of the $900,000 missing from these machines.
He was arrested by local authorities and formally accused of embezzlement.
He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
