A Texas woman was arrested Tuesday after DNA tests showed she was the biological mother of a baby who died in 2001.
Shelby Stotts, 48, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of second-degree manslaughter, the New York Post reported.
Twenty-three years ago, the newborn, nicknamed “Angel Baby Doe” at the time, was found in a field near Fort Worth, Texas, with his umbilical cord still attached.
“Stots recklessly caused the death of her newborn daughter by leaving her unattended on the side of the road, failing to promptly seek medical attention after delivery and failing to clamp the baby’s umbilical cord, which resulted in the child’s death,” prosecutors said, according to the New York Post.
Court documents say Stotts’ DNA was not linked to the crime until last September.
“After more than two decades, we are closer to securing justice for Angel Baby Doe and ensuring that the person responsible for this tragedy is held accountable,” Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement.
