An Alabama mother punished her 7-year-old son by forcing him to walk home from school, then accidentally ran over him, police say.
Sarai Rachel James, 27, went to pick up her son from Boaz school around 3:30 p.m. on February 9 and learned from the school principal that he had gotten into trouble at school that morning.
Not far from the school, police said Mme James had stopped his car and made his son get out. She told him he had to walk or run the rest of the way home.
The duo was then about a kilometer from their home.
Mme James drove alongside or followed her son for a few hundred yards, but when she slowed down, the boy tried to grab the car’s handle, Boaz Police Chief Michael said. Abercrombie, to McClatchy News.
The mother then accelerated and her son found himself under the car, which crushed him with a rear tire.
Police said investigators believe Mme James accidentally ran over the boy.
The boy was taken to University of Alabama Hospital with only abrasions on his back and side of his head.
James, 27, was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.
It is forbidden for Mme James to have any contact with his son, Al.com reported.
