American authorities released to the public on Wednesday the video filmed by the body camera of a police officer who shot and killed a mother and her two-month-old baby three weeks ago in the suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri.
The incident occurred on November 7 in the municipality of Independence. Police were called by one of the baby’s grandmothers, reporting that the mother, Maria Pike, 34, was behaving violently, according to information obtained by CNN.
The couple’s family indicated that Mme Pike could have suffered from postpartum depression, a very serious condition also called postnatal depression which can occur after childbirth and which “requires care”, we indicate on the site Naître et grow.
But by calling the police to intervene, the family expected them to arrest the mother and get her the help she needed.
However, the intervention quickly turned into tragedy.
Officers arrived at the apartment and spoke to the 34-year-old mother who was holding her baby, Destinii Hope, in her arms.
After entering the home, the police positioned themselves in front of the couple who were sitting on the bed.
The woman did not stay still, however. Armed with a long kitchen knife, she attacked one of the police officers.
The video revealed by the authorities stops at this moment, but the police officer then opened fire in the direction of the mother, killing her and her baby.
The incident remains under investigation. The procedure is being carried out by teams from the neighboring municipality of Blue Springs.
