(Washington) An American judge ordered the expulsion of the Propalestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil to Algeria or Syria, according to a public judgment on Wednesday.
The leader of the Propalestinian protest movement of Columbia University in New York will have to “be expelled from the United States to Algeria, or failing that to Syria” due to an irregularity in his request for a residence permit, ruled a judge from Louisiana, Jamee Comans.
Born in Syria to Palestinian parents and holder of an American resident card, Mahmoud Khalil was arrested on March 8 in New York by the Federal Border Police (ICE). He had been released on June 21, but his expulsion procedure was still in progress.
Having become the symbol of the will of the American president Donald Trump to muzzle the movement of support for Palestine on campuses, Mahmoud Khalil was accused by the Trump administration of being a “support for Hamas”.
