It is important to wear bright colors when walking in the forest during hunting season, the US Department of Natural Resources has warned after a woman was shot because a hunter allegedly disrespected her dog with a deer.

“Whether you plan to hunt or simply hike and explore Wisconsin’s forests, trails and public lands, stay safe and make sure you’re seen by wearing blaze orange,” had wrote the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) two days earlier on X.

Last Monday, just days after the start of the hunting season, a 47-year-old woman was reportedly shot in the stomach after her dog was mistaken for an antlerless deer by a 62-year-old hunter. that she was walking on private property, according to The Independent.

The hunter was likely shooting from a distance, from his vehicle, as offered by the state for hunters with disabilities, reported Lt. Mike Weber, hunter education administrator for the DNR.

At a press conference, the latter would have reiterated the importance of being visible in the forest for everyone during hunting periods, to avoid accidents.

Wounded in the stomach, the forty-year-old was rushed by plane via MedFlight to a hospital in the region, where she is still being treated for her injury, according to the British media.

Since the start of the season, the media has already noted two fatal hunting accidents in Iowa – a 53-year-old man and another 26-year-old. A third, this time in Minnesota, was also injured in the leg by accident by his partner, while he was checking to see if the guns were empty.
