The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said that Israel’s closure of the Rafah crossing exacerbates the severity of the catastrophic humanitarian crisis for Palestinian civilians, and accelerates the implementation of the crime of genocide that has been taking place since October 7, 2023.

The Observatory confirmed in a statement published on its website yesterday, Saturday, “The death of dozens of wounded and sick people as a result of Israel’s closure of the Rafah crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt and depriving them of life-saving treatment.”

He believed that Israel’s goal in closing the Rafah crossing on May 7 was to tighten its grip and stifling siege on the Gaza Strip and isolate it from the outside world, thus depriving the wounded and sick of traveling to obtain treatment.

He added that closing the crossing prevents the flow of humanitarian and medical supplies, and hinders the work of “the few remaining local hospitals” in the Gaza Strip.

He explained that more than 11,000 people wounded by the Israeli military attack urgently need to travel outside Gaza for treatment, while more than 10,000 cancer patients, including about 750 children, are at risk of death.

He explained that the severe deterioration of the health system, and the loss of most local hospitals from service, is the reason for cancer patients in Gaza losing any treatment for their disease, including hormonal and chemical treatments.

Euro-Med renewed its call for urgent international intervention to reopen the Rafah crossing and secure the movement of individuals, especially the sick and wounded, to enable them to receive life-saving treatment abroad, especially in light of the weakness of medical services due to the crime of genocide, which caused the destruction of the majority of hospitals and health facilities and the killing and arrest of dozens of doctors and staff.
