It was around 2 a.m. that pieces, nearly 9 meters long, fell to the ground, according to what the media reported Florida Today.
In images shared on social networks, it is possible to see the completely damaged skylights inside the airport terminal located an hour from Orlando, as well as the hole in the ceiling.
The general director of the international airport, Greg Donovan, confirmed to the American media that “a large section collapsed, causing a very large hole”. He still said he was “lucky” because the dry weather prevented too much water from seeping into the building.
Teams went to the site Thursday morning to secure the location.
“Our goal is to maintain the schedule in place to have the terminal open for operations by Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.,” Mr. Donovan added to the Florida Today, believing that “it could have been much worse.”
Due to the hurricane, the airport had closed its doors and no one was inside. No one was injured.
Repairing the roof could cost tens of thousands of dollars, Mr. Donovan estimated.
