Canadians fear the consequences of another Trump term as the next US election approaches, and half believe the US could become an authoritarian state if the former president is elected again.
This is what reveals a survey from the Angus Reid Institute published Monday. Thus, two-thirds of Canadians surveyed fear that American democracy “cannot survive another four years” under Trump’s presidency.
Half even think the United States could become an authoritarian state.
A new Biden-Trump duel
Three in five people (62%) think the United States will be “much worse” if Trump wins the next U.S. presidential election, which takes place on November 5. Conversely, 22% of Canadians surveyed believe that the country’s situation will improve.
If Biden wins a second term, Canadians tend to believe the situation in the United States will be better (34%) and a third (33%) expect his re-election “to have no effect.”
“Trump himself has said publicly that he is considering ‘retaliation’ if he wins again, after being impeached twice in his first four years and continuing to claim that the last election was “rigged,” recalled the Angus Reid Institute.
The survey was conducted from January 9 to 11, 2024, among 1,510 Canadians.
