(Mexico) Mexico denounced on Wednesday the deaths in the United States over the past year of 13 of its nationals, during anti-immigration raids or while they were detained by the American immigration police (ICE).

These deaths, mentioned during a press conference by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, occurred as part of the offensive against illegal immigration launched by President Donald Trump since his return to the White House in January 2025.

Six cases are linked to “medical complications” and four were classified as “suicides,” said Roberto Velasco, the undersecretary for North American Affairs.

Two other Mexicans died during anti-immigration raids and another lost his life during a shootout that targeted ICE facilities, Velasco said.

“We demand that human rights be respected. (…) We do not agree with these forms of detention,” declared left-wing president Claudia Sheinbaum during the same press conference.

Mexico says it sent 14 diplomatic communications in connection with these deaths and received 12 responses.

Last week, Mexico deplored the “unacceptable” death of one of its citizens, aged 19, in an ICE detention center in Florida and demanded a “thorough” investigation into it.

In 2025, at least 30 people died while in the custody of ICE, according to official statistics. This is the highest figure since 2004, the year after this policy was created.

U.S. Immigration Enforcement agents were deployed to 14 U.S. airports on Monday, according to a government official, due to a shortage of security personnel due to the partial budget shutdown.
