(Washington) Tornadoes killed at least eight people and injured more than a dozen people across the central United States on Friday, local authorities reported.

Four people died in Oklahoma, where the phenomenon gained strength between Thursday and Friday, and four others were killed in Michigan, in the Great Lakes region, more than 1,500 kilometers away.
A mother and her daughter are among four victims recorded in Oklahoma, according to state Governor Kevin Stitt.
In Michigan, the local sheriff reported three deaths and twelve injuries caused by a tornado near Union City, in the south of the state.

Some 50 miles (80 kilometers) further west, another person was killed and “several injured” in Cass County, said local authorities, who described many trees falling onto roads and buildings.
The state’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer, activated an emergency operations center Friday evening to coordinate relief efforts due to severe weather in southwest Michigan.
