(Washington) Donald Trump announced Thursday the organization on May 17 in Washington of a prayer rally to “consecrate America again to God”.

“On May 17, 2026, we invite Americans across the country to gather on our National Mall to pray and give thanks,” said the American president, who participated in a prayer breakfast in Washington.

“We will once again dedicate America to God,” he said, using the expression of the United States’ oath of allegiance which evokes “one nation under God”.

The National Mall is a large esplanade that stretches between a memorial to former President Abraham Lincoln and the Capitol, in the heart of the US capital.

The American president participated in the “national prayer breakfast”, an event held every year in February and which brings together parliamentarians, religious leaders as well as international guests.

Jumping from one subject to another during a long speech, Donald Trump, supported by the Christian right since his first campaign in 2016, assured that he had “done more for religion than any other president”.

The former real estate developer also said, in front of an assembly where opposition parliamentarians were present: “I don’t know how someone of faith can vote Democratic. »

The 79-year-old billionaire, father of five children born to three different wives, is not known to have any assiduous religious practice.

The Republican leader, who defines himself as a “Christian without affiliation,” quipped Thursday about his participation in this breakfast: “I don’t have the courage to refuse. Sometimes I want it. »

“I really need all the help I can get,” he said.

Donald Trump recently said he didn’t think he would go to heaven. He said Thursday he was more optimistic about his chances of eternal salvation.

“I really think I should make it,” he said, while acknowledging that he was “not a perfect candidate.”
