(Washington) The FBI’s search of an electoral center in Georgia, at the heart of unfounded accusations of fraud during the 2020 presidential election launched by Donald Trump, represents an attempt at “intimidation”, local authorities protested on Thursday.

The American federal police had confirmed “a police action authorized by the courts” on Wednesday at the elections office of Fulton County, in Atlanta, capital of the state of Georgia (South-East), without further details, but boxes of ballots were taken away by federal agents.

“As you all know by now, yesterday (Wednesday) from shortly after noon until approximately 9 p.m. last night, the FBI conducted a surprise warrant search at the Fulton County Election Center,” County Chairman Rob Pitts said at a news conference.

“Fulton County has been targeted for years because I stood up to Donald Trump’s big lie and refused to give in to pressure,” he said, claiming to have in 2020 ordered the outgoing Republican president and his allies to “get the hell out of Fulton County.”

“Every audit, every recount, every court decision has confirmed what we, the people of Fulton County, already knew: our elections were fair and the results were accurate and every legitimate vote was counted,” Pitts said.

“These actions are attempts to intimidate and create a diversion, not to establish the facts,” he said.

Donald Trump was indicted in 2023 by federal and Georgia courts for illegal attempts to reverse the results of the 2020 election, won by Democrat Joe Biden. These charges were dropped following his election in 2024 to a second term.

Last week, the Republican president reiterated his desire to take revenge on those responsible for the criminal proceedings against him.

“The 2020 election was a rigged election, everyone knows that,” he reaffirmed at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “People will soon be charged for what they did,” he threatened.
