A person is in critical condition after being shot Tuesday in Arizona in an incident involving the US Border Patrol.

The individual, who has not yet been identified, received the shot(s) in Pima County, southern Arizona near the border with Mexico, around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to a statement from local authorities.

The FBI says it is investigating an “alleged attack on a federal agent” near Arivaca, about fifteen kilometers from the border. It is unknown if any officer was injured during this altercation.

This comes against a backdrop of two U.S. citizens being killed in broad daylight, two weeks apart, by federal border and ICE agents in Minnesota.

The deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, and more broadly the increased presence of immigration police in several important Democratic cities, sparked a national outcry in the United States.

In the case of Tuesday’s incident, “the patient was transferred to a local medical helicopter for rapid transport to a regional trauma center,” the Santa Rita District Fire Department said.

Pima County police are leading the investigation at the request of the FBI, which is assisting them in this matter.
