Following the death on Saturday of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse killed by federal agents during a demonstration against the immigration police in Minneapolis (north), Democrats are now ruling out voting on the federal budget as it stands. This budget provides 64.4 billion for the Department of Homeland Security, including 10 billion for ICE.
“If we seriously want to translate our faith into action, we must say no,” said Cardinal Joseph Tobin, archbishop of Newark, near New York, in an online prayer Sunday evening, reported by the National Catholic Reporter, a Catholic publication.
“We are in mourning in the face of a world and a country that allows five-year-old children to be legally kidnapped and demonstrators massacred,” added the prelate, referring to the events of recent weeks in Minneapolis.
“How are you going to say no, how are you going to say no to violence? », he continues, suggesting participants to put pressure on their elected officials in view of Friday’s deadline in Congress to vote on the federal budget.
“Will you ask them, for the love of God and humans, who cannot be separated, to vote against renewing funding for this lawless organization? », asks Cardinal Tobin.
First American Pope, Leo XIV has often criticized President Donald Trump’s policy towards immigrants, denouncing in particular in November the “extremely disrespectful” treatment they suffer.
