Rarely in history has the destiny of the world depended on that of a single man. Yet this is what is happening in 2024. Whether we like Donald Trump or not, his re-election or defeat next November will decide a series of conflicts all over the planet.
Trump makes no secret of his intentions to rule like a dictator. On the first day alone, to resolve immigration problems and to increase oil drilling in the United States, he had the audacity to declare.
But who still believes Trump’s lies? Who thinks he would be satisfied with just one day of dictatorship? How can a dictatorship, even for a single day, be justified in a democracy?
Here are five highly likely global consequences of a Trump re-election.
1) Weakening of democracies
The imposition of various dictatorial measures in the United States would lead to pressure to adopt similar measures in other democracies. In France, Argentina, Italy, to name just these countries, various political parties could be tempted to follow Trump’s example. Human rights would go backwards.
The United States and the West in general would thus lose the moral superiority which until now had justified their actions throughout the world.
2) Worsening climate change
Trump had already begun during his first term to dismantle environmental agencies. He should continue his destructive work even more during a second term. Trump bases his actions on a logic of short-term profit. This is ideal for oil-producing countries as well as India and China.
3) Rise of the Russian threat
Trump is isolationist. He clearly mentioned that the conflict in Ukraine does not fall within the area of vital interests of the United States. However, without financial support from the United States, it will become virtually impossible for Ukraine to defeat Russia.
From then on, Russia will rebuild its forces and threaten other European countries.
If Ukraine is not in the vital interest of the United States, what about the small Baltic countries? From all of Europe in fact?
4) Danger of collapse of global security
Trump wants to take the United States out of NATO. To the point where, on December 15, Congress passed a law which prohibits such an exit unless a 2/3 majority vote of both chambers. But what would this vote be worth in a dictatorship?
NATO has been the keystone of all global security since the end of World War II. Without the United States, NATO risks collapse. Regional wars in Europe or the Near and Middle East would multiply.
5) Fall of Taiwan
Such isolationism from the United States would encourage China to attack Taiwan and further establish its power in the world. Didn’t Trump attack the “impure blood” of Asians and Africans? Why would Trump’s United States defend countries in these regions?
Nothing is yet decided for the elections next November. However, as the year progresses and the risks of a Trumpist victory are confirmed or not, international tensions will increase accordingly. For the moment, Trump is slightly ahead in the polls, despite his troubles with the law.
How to prepare for a possible Trump disaster? The world is watching, amazed, at the rise of this deep narcissist. A patient who defies justice and who is adored by half the American population. A misfit who risks destabilizing the planet.
