(Hudsonville) More than a hundred vehicles collided or skidded on a highway in Michigan as snow from the Great Lakes blanketed the state.

The massive pileup Monday morning led to the closure in both directions of Highway 196, just southwest of Grand Rapids near Hudsonville, as authorities worked to extricate all vehicles, including more than 30 tractor-trailers. State police said there were numerous injuries, but no deaths had been reported.
This accident is only the latest consequence of the violent winter storm which is crossing the country. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for extremely cold temperatures or the risk of winter storms in several states, from northern Minnesota south and east to Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.
The day before, snow had fallen as far as South Florida, making it difficult for American football players to hold the ball during playoff games in Massachusetts and Chicago. Forecasters warned Monday that freezing temperatures were possible overnight Monday into Tuesday across much of north central Florida and southeast Georgia.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office in Michigan said several crashes and jack-knifed tractor-trailers were reported, as well as numerous cars skidding off the road. Stranded motorists were transported by bus to Hudsonville High School, where they could call relatives or arrange transportation.
Officials expected the road to remain closed for several hours during the cleanup.
