Tensions between Europeans and Americans caused the main European stock markets to fall, after the threat made by the American president to impose new customs surcharges on eight European countries because of their opposition to Greenland. The European Union has promised a response.
“Since your country has decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize for ending “MORE” 8 wars, I no longer feel obligated to think only about peace,” Mr. Trump wrote in a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store made public Monday.
Mr. Store’s office confirmed the authenticity of the letter, in a message to AFP.
This letter was received in response to a message from Mr. Store and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, in which they expressed their “opposition to these tariff increases announced against Norway, Finland and certain other countries”, explains the Norwegian Prime Minister’s office.
Mr. Store also recalled that the Nobel Peace Prize was not awarded by the Norwegian government.
“I have clearly explained, including to President Trump, what is well known, that the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel committee and not by the Norwegian government,” he said.
In his message to the Prime Minister, Donald Trump reiterates his wish to see the United States take control of Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.
“Denmark cannot protect this territory against Russia or China,” he wrote. “The world will not be safe until we have Total and Absolute Control of Greenland,” he reiterated.
Meeting at NATO
Donald Trump campaigned hard to win the Nobel Peace Prize last year for what he said was efforts to end eight wars.
The prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado, who traveled to Oslo last month the day after receiving the prize, after fleeing Venezuela by boat.
On Truth Social, Trump claims that NATO has been telling Denmark for 20 years that the Nordic country must “remove the Russian threat from Greenland.”
“Unfortunately, Denmark could not do anything about this. Now is the time to act, and it will be done! ! ! “, he said.
Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stressed that measures had already been taken.
“The Danish and Greenlandic governments, in collaboration with several NATO allies, have decided to increase their military presence and training activities in the Arctic and the North Atlantic,” the minister added in a statement released Monday.
Lund Poulsen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt are due to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte later today.
” Blackmail ”
Furthermore, faced with the American customs threat, an extraordinary summit of the leaders of the 27 EU countries will be organized, probably on Thursday, and the Commission has been tasked with examining the various possible responses.
Emmanuel Macron intends to request the activation of the EU’s anti-coercion instrument, which makes it possible to limit imports from a country or its access to certain public markets and to block certain investments.
“We will not give in to blackmail. Europe will give a clear and unanimous response. We are currently preparing concerted countermeasures,” said German Economy Minister Lars Klingbeil.
Donald Trump threatens to add 10% more customs duties on imports from eight European countries, including France, the United Kingdom and Germany.
In this context, the Paris, Frankfurt and Milan Stock Exchanges fell by more than 1% by mid-morning.
“Using tariffs against allies is a complete mistake,” responded British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
In Greenland, the Greenlandic Sled Dog Federation announced that the new American special envoy to the Arctic island had been disinvited from its annual race.
