The city is experiencing an acute housing crisis, marked by some of the highest rents in the United States, a chronic shortage of affordable apartments and stark inequalities between tenants protected and not protected by rent controls.
For 100 days, New Yorkers who wish will be able to report to the municipality “all the difficulties they are facing – ranging from the degraded state of certain buildings to hidden fees applied when paying rent”, writes the city in a press release.
At the end of these consultations, the municipality promises “a report detailing the recurring problems and the areas for action identified” in order to guide “public policy measures intended to combat these abusive practices”.
Details of these hearings will be made public.
“From the first week of his mandate, Mayor Mamdani intends to clearly show that New York tenants now have an ally in City Hall,” the press release continues.
Coming from the small movement of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Zohran Mamdani, who promised to govern “on the left”, committed during the campaign to freezing the rents of more than a million apartments and building 200,000 affordable housing units.
