(New York) A shooting took place on the Brown campus in the city of Providence, near Boston and a suspect was arrested, announced the university, which is among the eight most prestigious on the east coast of the United States. The police, for their part, indicated that they were still looking for one or more suspects.

“A shooting is in progress near the Barus & Holley department. The Brown and Providence police are on site,” as well as the emergency services, the establishment said in an alert message, calling on students and staff to take shelter.
“A suspect has been arrested. Close the doors, turn off the phones and stay hidden until further notice,” added the university, which has some 11,000 students.
According to the university’s alert system, police responded to the Brown University campus in Providence on Saturday where a shooting was in progress.
Authorities initially said a suspect had been arrested, before correcting that information and indicating that police were still searching for one or more suspects.
The incident was reported near the Barus & Holley building, a seven-story structure that houses the college of engineering and the physics department, according to the university’s website. It includes 117 laboratories, 150 offices, 15 classrooms and 29 laboratories.
Authorities were continuing to gather information at the scene, said Kristy DosReis, the city’s public information officer.
This Ivy League university is a private, nonprofit institution with approximately 7,300 undergraduate students and just over 3,000 graduate students, according to its website.
Saturday was the second day of final exams for the fall semester.
