(Washington) The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to rule on whether mailed ballots received after Election Day should be counted, a case with possible implications for the 2026 midterm elections.

US President Donald Trump is a vocal critic of postal voting, which he wants to ban.

The Republican never acknowledged his defeat in the 2020 presidential election against former President Joe Biden and baselessly denounced massive electoral fraud by this method widely used in the United States.

The dispute that will be examined by the Supreme Court concerns an appeal filed by the Republican Party against a Mississippi law.

This law authorizes the counting of ballots received within five business days following the election, provided they are postmarked no later than election day.

Around thirty American states have similar laws.

A federal judge ruled in that case in favor of Mississippi, but his decision was overturned last year by an appeals court, which ruled that ballots had to arrive before the polls closed to be counted.

This dispute is part of a series of cases relating to electoral rights that the Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, must examine during the current session.

In particular, last month she heard arguments on the use of racial criteria in the division of electoral districts.

She is expected to rule on postal voting by the end of June and her decision could therefore apply during the midterm elections in November 2026.
