(New York) New York State Attorney General Letitia James, an outspoken opponent of Donald Trump who called for prosecutions against him, was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in Virginia.
This magistrate was herself at the origin of legal proceedings against Donald Trump, which earned her a very heavy sentence in 2024. She was indicted on Thursday on suspicion of falsification of documents concerning real estate loan applications.
According to the Washington Postprosecutors say Letitia James falsely stated that a Norfolk, Virginia, home she owned was her primary residence in mortgage loan documents, which allegedly allowed her to obtain more favorable terms.
This indictment comes after that of former FBI director James Comey, also a personal adversary of the American president.
For several days, Donald Trump has been putting pressure on his Department of Justice to obtain prosecutions against several of his pet peeves.
And Letitia James is a prominent one: she is at the origin of the fraud prosecutions launched against him and his two sons, Donald and Eric Jr, all three found guilty of having caused a colossal increase during the 2010s in the value of the Trump Organization’s assets – their skyscrapers, luxury hotels and golf courses around the world.
At the end of a highly publicized trial, which was held in 2024, Donald Trump was sentenced to a huge fine of 464 million dollars.
Last August, a New York state appeals court overturned the fine, citing an amount that was “excessive and violates the Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution,” which prohibits disproportionate sentencing.
The president has often said that Letitia James should be prosecuted and called this African-American judge “corrupt” and “racist”.
