(Washington) The United States General Prosecutor, Pam Bondi, defended the proceedings initiated by his services against Donald Trump opponents on Tuesday during a stormy hearing in the Senate where elected Democrats accused him of instrumentalizing justice for supporters.
The former lawyer of the Republican billionaire is the subject of harsh opposition criticisms, who denounce the disappearance, under his direction, of the independence of the department for the benefit of the White House.
“In eight short months, you have profoundly transformed the Department of Justice and left a huge spot in American history,” said Democratic Senator Dick Durbin before Pam Bondi, saying that in the difference of Donald Trump, his predecessor Joe Biden had never ordered the prosecutor of justice to continue his political opponents.
Pam Bondi defended her assessment at the head of the department, and said that her services were working to restore the confidence of the Americans towards justice after what she also qualified as political instrumentalization under Joe Biden.
“We come back to our fundamental mission to fight the real crime,” she said.
During his 2024 presidential campaign, when he was mired in several judicial cases, the republican billionaire had suggested many times that in the event of a return to power, he would attack his opponents.
In a recent publication on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump lasted the absence of prosecution initiated by federal prosecutors. Pam Bondi refused during his hearing to answer a question from the Democratic senator Richard Blumenthal who asked him if, the day before this indictment, the prosecutor had discussed James Comey with the president during a dinner in the White House, a supporting photo.

Adopting a combative tone, the prosecutor notably launched several personal attacks against the Democratic senators who questioned him.
