(Los Angeles) Three people are in critical condition after the fall of a medical helicopter on a highway near Sacramento, American media report on Tuesday.

The accident occurred on Monday just after 7 p.m. locals (10 p.m. Eastern time) shortly after taking off the device from a local university medical center.

A pilot, a nurse and an ambulancer were on board the helicopter who did not carry patients at the time of the accident, according to Justin Sylvia, a spokesperson for the firefighters. No vehicle was involved in the accident, the spokesman said.

The causes of the accident remain unknown.

The highway was closed for an indefinite period.
