A veterinary clinic which was to open its doors in a few weeks exploded on Tuesday in North Carolina after a car struck a gas pipe nearby.
About 20 minutes before the explosion, a car had left the road and struck the gas pipes fueling the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center, which was still under construction, according to Greg Willett, the spokesperson for the Wilmington police department.
The building was quickly evacuated and exploded while the firefighters searched the premises, added Rebekah Thurston, spokesperson for the city’s fire service.
Three firefighters were injured and hospitalized: two of them suffer from none -serious injuries, while the third presents serious burns in the hands and arms.
No member of the veterinary staff, no site worker and no animals were injured in the explosion.
The police quickly found the driver who had left the scene of the accident. He led with weakened faculties.
The veterinary clinic planned to open its new building in September.
