(New York) Federal Immigration Police carried out a spectacular arrest in New York on Tuesday, handcuffing a left -wing candidate for the town hall who came to help migrants threatened with expulsion, according to witnesses and officials.
The images disseminated by American witnesses and media show Brad Lander, who is also a financial controller of the city, in a tie costume, arrested by force and handcuffed by border police officers (ICE), in a court in the south of Manhattan.
“You do not have the authority to arrest an American citizen,” says Lander to the agents, some of whom have a face covered with a sanitary mask, according to videos.
The New York Letitia James general prosecutor deemed “deeply unacceptable” “Brad Lander’s arrest by ICE agents. “Arresting the Lander controller for the simple fact of having defended immigrants and their civil rights is an abuse of shocking power,” she said in a statement.
Solicited by AFP, the ICE did not comment on this case immediately. But in recent weeks, his agents have multiplied the arrests of so -called “illegal” immigrants or asylum seekers as soon as their hearing in the immigration court.
Since his return to power in January, Donald Trump and his government have multiplied the initiatives to expel as many undocumented migrants in the country. To facilitate expulsions, the federal authorities have canceled rules preventing police from accessing certain areas, such as the courts.
The Democratic Party, Rival of the Republicans of Donald Trump, opposes these measures.
Brad Lander went to the southern immigration court of Manhattan to accompany an immigrant threatened with expulsion, claiming the immigration police to “see the arrest warrant” concerning the latter.
Brad Lander is credited with third place in the primary of the Democratic Party for the New York town hall, behind the former state governor, Andrew Cuomo, and the surprise candidate Zohran Mamdani, who both castigated his arrest.
