British Prime Minister Kiir Starmer has pledged to protect British companies from the repercussions of the American customs duties, which was recently announced by US President Donald Trump, paving the way for government interventions to support the most affected sectors.

Starmer said that his government will do everything necessary to defend the national interest, stressing that it will intervene to protect the jobs of citizens.

In an article for the British Telegraph newspaper, he also said, “He will continue to defend freedom of trade and open it” despite America’s retreat towards protectionism.

He explained that there is no winner from a commercial war, and the world, as we knew, is over and we prepare for what is coming, explaining that the new world is governed by deals and alliances more than the established rules, considering that the maximum priority is to preserve calm and seek to obtain the best deal in relation to customs duties.

Starmer pointed out that the consequences of customs duties on Britain and the world may be dire, noting that all the options are on the authority of dealing with them.

Starmer stressed that his country is ready to use the industrial policy to protect British companies from the customs duties crisis.

Earlier, a British government spokesman said that Prime Minister Kiir Starmer agreed with French President Emmanuel Macron that any commercial war is in the interest of anyone, but all options remain on proposed.

In a telephone conversation, the two leaders also expressed their concern about the economic and security consequences in the world of new American customs duties, especially in Southeast Asia.

US President Trump has announced comprehensive import taxes on foreign countries, including 10% customs duties on British goods, which are the lowest percentage. This announcement has sparked reprisal reactions from a number of countries, and the largest decrease in global stock markets since the Korna pandemic.
