US President Donald Trump confirmed his “Truth Suosheel” platform today, Monday, the suspension of 25% customs duties on Mexican imports “immediately” would have come into effect tomorrow, Tuesday.
The US President said that he had “a very friendly conversation with Mexican President Claudia Shinbom,” and explained that during the period of one month’s suspension, negotiations will take place with the aim of reaching an “agreement” with Mexico.
“During the freezing of customs duties, we will conduct negotiations headed by 3 US ministers and high -ranking Mexican officials,” Trump added.
For its part, the Mexican president stressed that the United States has agreed to freeze customs duties for a month.
During a press conference in the capital, Mexico City, Shinbom said she suggested to Trump during a telephone conversation freezing the customs duties that Washington was planning to impose tomorrow on Mexico and agreed to comment for a month until the matter was discussed extensively between the two parties.
She added that the Mexican and American teams will start today to work on the fields of security and trade, noting that Mexico will deploy 10,000 national guard soldiers on the border immediately to prevent drug smuggling to the United States.
“We agreed that the United States will abide by working to prevent smuggling of high ammunition weapons to Mexico,” she said.
Last Saturday, Trump signed executive orders to impose customs duties on imports from Canada, Mexico and China, and threatened to impose fees on the European Union imports.
According to an official at the White House, it happened Trump has an order to impose a 25% fee on all imports from Mexico.
Trump justifies these measures by accusing the three countries of playing a role in the fentanel crisis, a strong opium material that causes a huge crisis in the United States.
Trump says China exports the basic components of the drug to Mexico, allowing Mexican drug gangs to manufacture fentanel that is then sold in the United States. Mexico and Canada also criticizes their lack of control over the irregular migration flows.
