Russian President Vladimir Putin announced during a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow and Tehran are discussing the possibility of supplying Iran with Russian gas, in a move aimed at diversifying Russian gas flows and finding new buyers after the decline in exports to Europe as a result of the war in Ukraine.
Putin indicated that the project, if fully implemented, could lead to supplying Iran with up to 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually, but stressed that the initial phase will begin with small quantities not exceeding two billion cubic meters.
For his part, Pezeshkian explained that there are some technical issues that need to be addressed before moving forward with the project, according to what was reported by Reuters.
In a related context, the Russian Interfax news agency, citing Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsevilev, reported that the proposed gas pipeline between Russia and Iran would pass through the territory of Azerbaijan if it is actually implemented.
Putin reiterated that Russia is looking for ways to diversify gas flows and secure new outlets for it, in light of the challenges posed by recent geopolitical developments, according to what Reuters reported.
