At least three people were killed and a quarter injured on Wednesday after a bridge collapsed during demolition work in Mississippi, United States.

The tragedy occurred as work to demolish the infrastructure was underway, Simpson County Sheriff Paul Mullins told local media WJTV-TV, according to the “New York Post” .

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said in a statement that the Route 149 bridge over the Strong River has been closed since Sept. 18 as part of an infrastructure replacement project.

The Simpson County Coroner’s Office dispatched crews to the scene, but did not provide further details on the incident, which occurred while work was underway at the site, or on the identities of the victims, according to the American media.
