A 41-year-old man who had just left the emergency room of a New York hospital stole an ambulance, causing a wild chase that ended in a spectacular swerve.
Around 3 a.m. Tuesday, Ernest Burkett, who had just left the emergency room at Montefiore Hospital in New Rochelle, grabbed the wheel of an ambulance and sped off, the New York Post.
Patrol officers, informed of the incident, attempted to intercept the vehicle, but the fake paramedic refused to stop, prompting a police chase through half a dozen towns.
“The pursuit took the ambulance to Eastchester, where the Eastchester Police Department and Scarsdale Police attempted to stop the vehicle,” the department said in a statement.
“The stolen vehicle collided with Eastchester and Scarsdale police vehicles during the pursuit,” the statement continued, adding that the ambulance traveled through Scarsdale, Greenburgh, White Plains and finally Irvington.
Arriving half an hour later in the Irvington area, the ambulance, which had been racing past a bend, violently crashed into a power pole before overturning.
The 40-year-old, who was arrested and taken to Westchester County Hospital with minor injuries, faces charges including robbery, fleeing and criminal mischief, according to the Post.
