A brief power outage plunged all of New York into darkness Thursday evening as smoke billowed from a Brooklyn power plant.
Shortly before midnight, images shared on social media and reported by the New York Post showed smoke coming from what appeared to be a Con Edison substation in Vinegar Hill.
The New York electricity provider did not immediately respond to the outage, while the New York Fire Department reported several calls reporting power outages and blocked elevators.
“We are currently investigating this issue and appreciate your patience while we review this matter,” Con Edison later posted on X (formerly Twitter), as if in response to customer concerns.
Elevators and escalators at Central Station stopped working following “a Con Edison power problem,” the Long Island Rail Road transportation system reported.
Police officers responded to the Con Ed substation on Gold Street, where an explosion in a transformer caused power surges and outages across New York City, according to the New York tabloid.
