American carmaker General Motors said Monday that it would be making layoffs in its software and IT services business, confirming reports from several American media outlets that more than 1,000 jobs would be cut.
“As we build the future of GM, we must simplify (our operations) to gain speed and excellence,” the Detroit (Michigan) group said in a statement sent to AFP.
“To do this, we are reducing the size of certain teams in the software and services division,” the manufacturer continued.
CNBC and the daily newspaper The Detroit News both mentioned more than 1,000 job cuts, citing sources familiar with the matter. GM declined to confirm the figure when contacted by AFP.
In January 2023, the group announced that it planned to achieve more than $2 billion in savings over the next two years.
In fiscal 2023, GM managed to reduce its administrative costs by almost 8% compared to the previous fiscal year.
According to the company’s annual reports, the workforce has fallen from 167,000 to 163,000 between the end of 2022 and the end of 2023.
According to CNBC and The Detroit Newssome 600 of the positions being eliminated will be at the Warren, Michigan, site.
