A Texas man is charged with attempted voluntary manslaughter for giving gasoline to his four-month-old child, several US media outlets reported.

Edgar James Bridgemon admitted he committed the act with the intent to end the newborn’s life, the Paris, Texas, Police Department told FOX News.

The child’s mother believes that it was her decision not to have a relationship with the accused that caused the tragedy. However, he still had the right to visit her baby whenever he wanted.

“It’s terrifying,” she told FOX News. “I don’t think I can ever trust anyone with my children again.”

The newborn, meanwhile, was transferred to a hospital near Dallas. His condition is improving every day.

“I just want my baby to come home,” she said. “It breaks my heart.”

Last Saturday, officers responded to a call from the mother about the tragedy.

Authorities found the suspect who had fled the scene and quickly caught him. He does not live with the woman and baby.

The 24-year-old was also arrested for escaping from police.

Mr. Bridgemon is currently being held on bail of $255,000 US ($349,700 Canadian).

An investigation is underway to better understand the cause of the event.
