A 20-year-old woman was reportedly found dead Tuesday in the Grand Canyon National Park in the United States after several days of searching, as nearly a dozen deaths have already been reported at the popular tourist site this year.
Last Tuesday, the lifeless body of Leticia A. Castillo was reportedly located after a three-day search for the young woman from Albuquerque, New Mexico, according to CBS News.
According to the National Park Service (NPS), she had visited the site, which is particularly popular with tourists, the previous Saturday and had not been seen since.
After a days-long search, his body was eventually located about 150 feet below the edge of Twin Overlooks, a scenic and easily accessible viewpoint along Desert View Drive, the statement said.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the young woman’s death.
It was the third death to occur at the park since July 31, and the eleventh death since the start of the year, according to a compilation by The Independent.
“Since July 31, the Grand Canyon Search and Rescue team has completed three technical recoveries. Despite adverse weather conditions and dangerous terrain, the team took significant risks to complete these missions,” the NPS said.
On July 31, the body of a visitor from North Carolina, Abel Joseph Mejia, also 20, had to be recovered by rescuers after he fell 400 feet near the Pipe Creek Overlook, according to CBS News.
The next day, authorities were expected to conduct a recovery operation after a base jumper, a sport banned in all areas of the Grand Canyon National Park, was found dead 150 meters from the rim with his parachute deployed.
His identity has not been released by authorities.
