“We didn’t have the money to have the dream reception that I always imagined,” Daniel Jean explained to the American media.
The 38-year-old decided to surprise his wife, Esmy Valdez, with an underground reception.
The couple exchanged vows in a private church ceremony. They wanted to celebrate with 20 friends afterward, but the bride and groom couldn’t afford a big reception in a hall.
According to a report from wedding specialist The Knot, a full wedding in New York City – including ceremony and reception – can cost up to CAD$85,000.
A subway user posted a video on TikTok, saying she doesn’t know the bride and groom at this wedding reception, but she wishes them the best for the future.
With the help of a friend, Mr. Jean planned this extraordinary evening.
“I hosted the reception, (a friend) helped with the planning and we hired a wedding planner to help with the overall production,” Jodell Lewis told the New York Post.
The whole thing reportedly cost around 4,000 Canadian dollars. A meal, cake, cocktails and music were on the menu for the celebration.
“It was an incredibly fun and memorable evening,” Mr Lewis added.
For her part, Mrs. Valdez admitted to the American media that her wedding reception strengthened her love for her husband.
“When I got on the train and saw everything, I thought I had chosen the right person,” she says happily.
