Accused of sexual violence by 16 women, some of whom were minors at the time of the events, the illusionist David Copperfield is making waves at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Here on the Croisette, everything that concerns celebrities quickly goes around the agents, but also the actors and actresses on site,” says journalist Henry Arnaud, currently in Cannes.

The conjurer denied the allegations against him revealed by the newspaper The Guardianhis lawyers mentioning that their client had “never behaved inappropriately with anyone, even less with a minor.”

Furthermore, the #Metoo movement seems to have cooled the spirits in Cannes while the parties are becoming increasingly rare.

“Both actors and producers are afraid of excesses. This year, compared to past years, everyone returns calmly to their hotel while waiting for the screenings the next day,” adds Henry Arnaud.

Although the allegations Copperfield faces are very serious, they remain complex to prove.

“These are accusations that linger against many celebrities in showbiz and which are very difficult to verify as long as the women do not agree to speak and give details,” he says.

The allegations surrounding David Copperfield add another layer to the entertainment industry.

“This is an additional problem in showbiz which has been more than battered by these revelations for several years,” says Henry Arnaud.
