Died in a car accident, this American woman allegedly asked her friend to drive slower just before the latter lost control of the car.

Last November, in Kent County, Michigan, 19-year-old Ella Vece was driving 100 miles per hour, or 160 km/h. It was Thanksgiving in the United States and the young woman was with her best friend Nevaeh Down, 18 years old.

Attempting to jump a hill, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it ended up hitting a tree, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

If Ella Vece escaped alive, although seriously injured, Nevaeh Down was less lucky. The latter was pronounced dead on site.

But now a recording has surfaced. In the latter, the victim is heard telling the driver to slow down because another vehicle was coming in the opposite direction, which probably distracted her, said prosecutor Christopher R. Becker.

“These are kids doing stupid things. And it ended in tragedy,” he added in an interview with the New York Post.

Being very close to Ella Vece, the parents of Nevaeh Down asked that no prosecution be initiated against the driver whom they consider their daughter.

However, Mr Becker said he had to “hold her accountable one way or another”.

She was thus charged with reckless driving causing death, which is considered a felony. However, the young woman would plead for a moving offense causing death, which is rather a misdemeanor.

Ella Vece should receive her sentence next June. If convicted of the criminal offense, she could receive a one-year prison sentence.
