Baltimore residents were deeply shocked by the collapse of a major bridge in their municipality which was hit by a container ship early Tuesday morning, which felt like an earthquake.

The sound of the ship colliding with the Francis Scott Key Bridge shook a resident’s house.

“The earthquake was like a big thunderclap,” he told the local CBS News channel. “It felt like an earthquake, the whole house shook. As if my house was falling apart.”

The one who has lived in the neighborhood near the bridge for 57 years assured that he had never imagined that such a thing would happen in “his wildest dreams”.

For another resident, this event will “be catastrophic for many reasons”, in particular because the port is blocked, as are deliveries by car.

One resident recalled being on the bridge just the day before. “To see the bridge disappear when I was on this bridge not even 10 hours ago, it’s devastating,” he testified to the media.
