Israeli government spokesman Elon Levy described the tunnels used by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) as unique, while a British newspaper quoted another official as saying that the destruction of Gaza’s tunnels is like science fiction.
Levy said that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is committed to achieving the war’s goals, including the release of hostages and ending the rule of Hamas.
In a related context, the British Financial Times quoted an Israeli official as saying that the destruction of the Gaza tunnels is like science fiction, despite the resources the Israeli government is spending to find solutions to achieve this goal.
The official revealed that Tel Aviv received US aid amounting to $320 million allocated for anti-tunnel technologies, but to no avail, as he put it.
The Israeli official also said that the Hamas movement learned from previous attacks and wars launched by the occupation on the Gaza Strip, which aimed to destroy the tunnels.
The official, who refused to reveal his identity, described that what Hamas created under the Gaza Strip “goes beyond the description of tunnels and is more like underground cities.”
He said that Israeli army estimates indicate that the Hamas tunnel network in Gaza is larger than the London underground train network.
The Wall Street Journal quoted American officials as saying that Israel has established a large system of pumps that may be used to flood tunnels used by Hamas under the Gaza Strip.
In a related context, the occupation forces claimed that they had found more than 800 tunnel openings in the Gaza Strip since the start of the current ground operation.
It said it destroyed about 500 tunnel openings, using explosives to destroy tunnels several kilometers long.
Before the current Israeli aggression on Gaza, which entered its eighth week, Hamas stated that it had tunnels hundreds of kilometers long to serve and protect its operations bases.
