Donald Trump on Saturday underlined his opposition to a draft agreement on immigration that Joe Biden is trying to negotiate with the Republicans in the US Congress, and which the Democratic president says will allow him to close the border with Mexico.
“A bad agreement on the border is much worse than no agreement at all!” wrote in capital letters the Republican favorite for the 2024 presidential election on his Truth Social network.
Joe Biden hopes to convince Republican elected officials to validate his bill on controlling illegal immigration at the Mexican border, an issue which is emerging as one of the key subjects of the presidential campaign.
Campaigning in Las Vegas in Nevada (west), Mr. Trump assured Saturday that there was “100% probability that there will be a major terrorist attack in the United States” carried out by people who crossed the border with Mexico.
The former president vilified Mr. Biden’s plan, promising once again to “launch the largest deportation operation in America”, to the cheers of the audience.
Traveling to South Carolina (southeast) on Saturday, Joe Biden defended the text, assuring that it would “give him, as president, the emergency authority to close the border” until the situation is under control.
“If this text were in force today, I would close the border immediately and I would resolve this quickly,” he insisted.
The outgoing president, who is seeking a second term, praised Friday “the most severe and fair set of reforms we have ever had in our country to secure the border.”
Joe Biden has agreed to toughen his tone on immigration, in the hope that the Republicans, who have linked the two issues, will give the green light to a new program of crucial military aid to Ukraine.
But Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson warned that as it stands, any vote on new funding for Ukraine was “stillborn.”
Donald Trump has made immigration one of the major axes of his campaign to regain the White House in 2025 and he is using his influence with the Republicans to block any agreement on Ukraine.
